John David Bathgate Macdougall was born in 1918 and educated at Perth Academy and University College, Dundee, graduating from St. Andrews University with an MB, ChB with commendation in 1942. He joined the staff of St Salvator's College in 1943 and transferred to University College, Dundee, in 1946.
